HÜDIG Dewatering Training

Winter time is training time

Incorrectly installed in this setup!

During the winter months, the excavators of most civil engineering companies stand still. Some companies use this time to train their personnel in the application and operation of the machines and equipment by the respective manufacturers.

HÜDIG is committed to these tasks and is training the customers in the application and installation of dewatering systems.

In particular, the employees are instructed in the details of the installation and commissioning of dewatering systems. A noticeable aspect is the low level of maintenance required for a HÜDIG vacuum unit.

During these training measures, which were appreciated with great interest by the employees of various companies also this year, HÜDIG also presents the working methods of different pumping systems which are used in a vacuum process as well.

The piston pump is to be mentioned here, for example. In general, a piston pump is also justified. For instance, they find their professional application on pipeline construction sites. In inner-city areas they are not suitable. It is indeed claimed that the energy demand would be low – there are statements regarding 1 l Diesel fuel per hour, but what does the pump convey during this hour? Take a pressure hose and hold it 12 m high, in that case the engine does not have enough power and will be stalled! In practice, that means that the dewatering target will not be reached and a further or several further units must be additionally installed, which will cause additional costs.

The authorities often require to measure the amount of conveyed groundwater and to pay certain fees in many cases. We are giving an example, where an increased installation effort was carried out for the implemented measure. The water meter must be installed behind the buffer tank. The following figure shows an installation mistake.

At the end, the customer had to pay the groundwater discharge fee for the conveyed air as well.

It becomes clear that the use of a piston pump in inner-city pipeline construction is often too complex and inefficient. In the present case, the jetted filters even produced a certain amount of sand contamination, which in turn led to an increased wear pattern in the area of the pistons, the cylinders and the piston collars.

Since a piston pump generates the pumping effect mainly by the tightness in the piston, it is easy to imagine the wear and tear experienced by a piston pump in case of sand contamination.

The simple sketch of the design of a piston pump makes it clear how important it is to  have a good sealing between the piston and the cylinder and what would happen with the pistons in case of sand contamination. The inner-city pipeline construction requires a safe and low-maintenance pump system, which is offered by HÜDIG GmbH & Co. KG. The main features of HÜDIG vacuum technique are a high level of operational safety and low maintenance costs even under high workload.

The use of wastewater pumps forgives the pulling off of a filter hose in order to remove any possible residual water directly. The increased sand contamination does not pose any problem to the HÜDIG technology, but a piston pump will fail immediately in such cases.

By the way, another crucial advantage of a professional vacuum unit is that you can adjust the vacuum level via the ventilation valve. You can determine the depth required to pump the ground water. So you protect the aquifer and not least your money bag. This is not possible with a piston pump!
